The Mines Shopping Fair

The exhibition will be opened to the public from 11am to 10pm for the next four days. From what I was told, the exhibition already drew a preview crowd on the 25th as they were setting up the exhibits for the opening day (26th); That pleasantly forced the exhibition committee to keep the exhibition open till 11pm the night before. At 10.30am, the crowd was already trickling in, by 11.30am, a constant crowd was streaming through the exhibition area and it continued till closing time. This fantastic scenario was a repeated performance for the entire duration of the exhibition. I'm amazed at the number of people who have a keen interest in astronomy in Malaysia. Maybe the wonderfully dark skies they have there is a factor of inspiration.

The Exhibition Layout

28 display boards hosting 361 photo exhibits circle the centre stage. seating capacity of 60 faces the stage. To the right of the stage, the 3D astronomical exhibit. Behind the stage, a TV programme featuring various topics about the universe.

To the right of the stage is a six-sided viewing box housing a 3D-astronomical exhibit from Japan's Akiro Inaka. That was a strong highlight of the exhibition as people queued to glimpse the six 3D pictures featuring a Leonid meteor shower, comet Hale-Bopp, the Lagoon nebula, the Trifid nebula... (memory fails me with regards to the last 2 exhibits.)

Behind the stage, a 6-hour recorded programme was running on space exploration, planetary observations and other astronomical subjects. That got the attention of many, especially the children.

The exhibition space doesn't end here. It stretches behind the seating area to rows of tables on either side. These tables are designated spaces for a computer networking company who is covering the event, a stamp company selling their wares, an area for the display of William Optics telescopes, several local and overseas astronomical magazines and books and astrophotographs, and Starhunter Astronomical Society's information booths.

The exhibition attracted both astronomers and non-astronomers. Exhibition guides were on hand to bring the public on a tour of the exhibits. Several participating astrophotographers from Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and Japan were also present.
